Jeff and I did have one BIG adventure a couple of weeks ago. This month and next month my grandparents both turn 85! So my dad and aunt and uncles decided to throw them a surprise 85th birthday party in Phoenix. Well the price was right for the flight for the both of us and we could both get the time off work so we decided to take our first family vacation to Phoenix.
First of all, for any one who knows Jeff really well, they know that he hasn't flown a lot in his lifetime. Me on the other hand, I have flown more times than I think I wanted to sometimes. I guess that is what happens when you decide to go to a college thousands of miles away. I will admit that I was a little nervous flying with a baby. I have never really flown with a baby before. Jeff was just nervous to fly anyway. I have flown with him before to San Francisco but I don't remember him being so nervous. The night before we left, I told him we were already checked in for our flight and started freaking out about how we would get our boarding passes and get on the flight. I had to calm him down and reassure him that I had everything taken care of. All he had to do was follow me and we would be good. Let's just say that traveling with a baby is a LOT of work. I was worried about getting through security because we had to collapse the stroller, take her out of the car seat and we didn't check our bags. So we had the stroller, the car seat, her diaper bag, my purse and two bags with our stuff in it. Luckily the security agents were nice enough to help us out. I was more worried about people standing behind me giving me dirty looks and mumbling under their breath. Some people are just rude that way. But luckily, it was pretty easy. The flight to Phoenix was pretty easy. She ate during take off and then slept the rest of the way. The only reason she woke up was because when the plane touched down, it scared her.
So we got to Phoenix, got our stuff and went to the car rental place. And this is where the fun really began. I made a pre-paid reservation for Hertz online about a week before the trip. We get to the car rental place and there is a huge line for Hertz. We're standing in line and all of a sudden we hear one of the employees say that once you get to the counter there was about an hour and a half wait for a car. Why? Because they ran out of cars. How do you run out of cars for people who make reservations? I was a little baffled. I get to the counter and the guy informs me that there is a wait and if I want to go check somewhere else I can. I just looked at him and started laughing. They already had my money so why would I want to go somewhere else? About an hour later, we had a car and we were on our way. First stop...In and Out Burger! We were starving. After we ate, we went to surprise my grandparents (they didn't know we were coming in to town!). They were really surprised to see us and really happy to see the baby.
Saturday we went to eat at one of favorite places - Peter Piper Pizza! Man how I wish they had one of those here. They have some of the best pizza. After that we went to the mall and then spent time with my aunt and uncle. Sunday was the big day for the party! We had to get my grandparents out of the house. My grandma suspected something was going on because there were too many family members in town all at once. We got them out of the house and got everything set up. Family and friends from all over came to the party. It was great. My grandparents were completely surprised. I got to see some cousins that I haven't seen for years and they got to see the baby. It was a great trip. The baby did really well on the trip. Here are some pictures of my crazy family:
